This vacuum was listed as the #2 choice in the March Consumers Report. The #1 choice is a similar model that has a bag instead of being bagless. I have had this machine for two weeks and have found it to be the best cleaning machine that I have ever owned. It is also very easy to swith from carpet cleaning to tool use because of the onboard tools and switching controls in the handle of the vacuum. I'm overwhelmed by the amount of dirt that I have sucked out of my carpets. I think you'll be pleased with this machine if you decide to buy it.

Pros: bagless, easy controls on the handle
Cons: cord is a little tedious to wind up after use

From the beginning, my machine clogged on carpets -- with roller off and height set properly. For months I fiddled with adjustments, thinking I was doing something wrong. I then looked at the spot where the dirt moves from the roller into the hose. There is a tiny tube -- smaller than a piece of popcorn and much narrower than the diameter of the external hose -- through which the dirt passess. That's where the clogs were. I think it's a design flaw. It rendered my vacuum useless. Because I waited more than 3 months to return it, Sears personnel refused to take it back or repair it free of charge. They were legally right to do so, but it left me with little confidence in the way Sears backs up its products.

Seems to work very well in picking up dirt, but it's a serious pain that this does not have a retractable cord, and having to clean out the filters all the time is not an advantage over a machine with a bag. At least the bag kept the dirt from puffing out all over when you emptied it. You might not have to buy bags any more, but you have to buy filters, which are also expensive. I find that if I vacuum until the sensor turns green, I might have to clean the filter twice per room, so having to clean it out all the time is very tedious.
I also find that it is almost impossible to use to vacuum stairs. The hose is not very stretchy or flexible, and the machine is rather heavy and too wide to sit on the step securely while you use the hose and nozzle on the steps.
It definitely picks up dirt, though.

This is the top of the line, Sears vacuum cleaner. I bought it in August of 2006, it is now April of 2008. I have probably used it a total of 20 times in a fairly small house. After about a year and a half, therefore out of warranty, it has completely failed. The main motor and the control board have died. Sears wants $175 to fix it. I did not buy an extended service contract, I have never (I'm 60 years old) had a vacuum cleaner actually just die before this very expensive, Sears, machine. I'll be damned if I'm going to give them that much money to fix a machine that should not have broken so completely and so soon. So I can't possibly recommend them. This is sure not to Sears I grew up with.

Pros: Dirt sensor is useful, suction good.
Cons: Filter is a time consuming pain to clean.

Bought this machine 2 years ago, worked fine but in the past 6 months have started to have a few problems with it and it is slowly falling apart. We used it a moderate amount of times (2 times a week for a 1200 Square foot home) and would expect this American machine to last forever, but nope. The filters are daunting and expensive, but it's the convenience we knew we were exchanging. The motor make a really loud noise now, still picks up dirt though, only now everyone covers their ears when it's turned on. Wouldn't recommend this machine to anyone, I would just say save another $100 and buy something with a warranty. DON'T BUY FROM SEARS, they don't stand behind the products they sell. They won't do anything for you if your machine breaks down, the customer care website isn't even user friendly either.

We purchased this one becasue the store was out of stock on the bag version. Canister was a pain to empty and change. It was very hard to get replacement filters - the local Sears store stopped carrying them in stock about a year after we purchased the vacuum cleaner. Two years after purchase, it lost suction and started to make a loud rasping noise.
I'm going to buy something else for my next one. I'm also going to stay away from bagless adn go back to bags.

This vacuum has been excellent for me. I live in an apartment with two inside cats -- two shedding inside cats. Prior to this vacuum, I could run my finger across the carpet and come up with a clump of cat hair. Now? Perfectly clean.
The intelliclean feature is excellent. I honestly couldn't imagine vacuuming without it. I do have to sometimes go over the same spot a lot of times, but when that sensor turns green, I know it's clean.
When I first brought this vacuum home, I thought that sensor was broken -- it was always on "red" (highest setting). It took me about 6 hours to vacuum my apartment that first time (it was really dirty!). Now it takes me about 15-20 minutes.

I am a typical single man with a 100lb Labrador who was very weary of spending this much $ on a vacuum. I am not a neat freak so keep in mind. I had a total failure with a vacuum half this price and "pet hair vacuum" in the title so I was not optimistic of a vacuum cleaner that could actually get the job done.
The positives: This vacuum has incredible suction. I think dirt is afraid to come to my house now. This is the only vac I have ever seen that totally picks up dog hair. It is amazing! I like the bagless feature. I think that helps suction and saves money over time. I do not think the vac is too heavy but I do lift a lot of weights. I could see how the weight would be a problem for some people. I really like the extra long power chord. That is a great feature.
The negatives: The filter has to be cleaned by rinsing it under tap water. It can get kind of messy and you have to let it dry completely before you put it back in or you will have a muddy filter (yes I did that)! It does not clean well next to wall and furniture. Period! I have had a problem with the machine shutting off in one room. I am 100% it has to do with a large amount of static electricity in that room because I hear the static crackle just before the vac shuts off. Maybe a safety feature? The price is the final negative. I have to say I love this vacuum's power but it still costs a bundle.
